Baldone forests were preserved for various reasons. First, they grow in barren soil. Where there is a swamp, there is no agriculture, where there are mountains - too. Secondly, even in the past, when the sanatorium was open and Baldone was a resort, walks in the woods were believed to contribute to patients' recovery. Therefore, deforestation closest to the sanatorium was excluded!
During the First and Second World Wars, the forests of Mercendarbes and Riekstukalns were cut down to ensure the operation of the front. The war railway line crossed here, wooden buildings were built. But then the forest grew back and is now back to the cutting age.
The protection zone of suburban forests is 150 ha, and they belong to JSC “Latvijas valsts meži”, therefore economic activity here is prudent. Due to all these circumstances, we have been able to offer you this route. All the city's forests belong to the municipality and their total area is 341 ha.
Following the route, you will come to a forest that is used only for local walks, the Forest Gallery, Doļu Hill, Morrison Hill, Dūņu Bog and the historic center of Baldone, where you will find fountains that bring the Baldone (fragrant) sulfur spring to the surface. You will see both the forests and the former center of the town - the ancient wooden architecture, for which the days are numbered, because for years rarely has the building been properly cared for by its owners. You will have to climb 2 mountains.
You will also be at the foot of Mount Morrison, where two equestrian clubs have found their home.
